It's a Classical Life

  Doing word searches and cross words is one of my favourite past times. I find them really relaxing and I know there are those of you who do too. I've also realised that I actually really like making  word searches. Today I have one for you based on the Golden Age of Hollywood. I mentioned here that I've been enjoying watching film noir movies and others from the 1930s-1950s so was inspired to make one based around that time.  Downloading the word search is simple. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in our house! The kids are all on holidays now and the sun is shining. After a couple of mediocre summers I am embracing a long, hot summer with Christmas to look forward to. What's it like where you are? Hot? Snowy? Windy? (We've had some really bad storms already this summer with wind taking down trees all around us). I have created this word search for you to enjoy this weekend. Recently the gum tree at the end of our street was in bloom with gorgeous pink blossoms. I was able to pick a couple that had fallen on the road and bring them home to paint.   Hello, there! I'm so glad you're here. Today I'm sharing another fun and free word search; this time on the life and works of the incomparable Charlotte Bront ë. Jane Eyre is one of my all time favourite novels, and the Bront ë sisters are responsible for some of our best loved classics. I really hope you enjoy these word searches.   It's been more than a year that I did a round up of some of the best free classic downloads available from Amazon. Sometimes it is hard to find the classics that we want to read, and my library in particular is not very good at stocking copies of true classic literature. I'm not sure if they made a "relevant, contemporary" cull of all their classic books or if they just don't have a need to have multiple (or any) copies of certain older books. Ideally, I always look in the library first because I love paper books. I've been to the library a couple of times this week because I'm doing some research on Australian during the world wars and during the Great Depression, and although there's plenty of books on Australian history, the classic novels I was looking for weren't there. This week I was looking for Villette by Charlotte Bront ë and found the complete collection of  Bront ë's novels (including the unfinished Emma) on Amazon for free. Sadly...

I have something fun and exciting to share with you all today. I love word games, puzzles and riddles and I especially love word searches and crosswords. I thought you might like them too, so I have started creating classic themed word searches for you to download on the first Friday of every month (perfect for the weekend - perhaps whilst watching the Coronation!) The first one is the characters of Jane Austen's novels. Each word search is made with large print and includes a floral picture, hand-painted by me.   We've been chatting a bit lately about how life is becoming more expensive, and last week I shared 9 ways to live well when money is tight . One of these tips was to join the public library and to use it for free entertainment. In continuing with this theme I noticed that there are a lot of classic books available for free online. Many of these are available for download at Gutenberg, but Vicki at V ickie's Kitchen and Garden often shares free digital Kindle downloads, and I thought I would do the same. The ones I want to share today are from Amazon and work well with the free Kindle App that can be downloaded on both Apple and Android phones. I have a second-hand iPhone 8 and it works perfectly with these digital downloads. As we read through the Classics there's nothing nicer than a pretty bookmark. I know they are a dime a dozen and often even come with your online book orders but these cute home-made ones are perfect for your Classical reading. They would also make great gifts for a book club, or a History Faculty. Print them off for free and then laminate them. You can even punch some holes in the top and add a pretty ribbon. There are two types, a pastel floral theme and a more bold colourful theme.
