John Burroughs said that the smallest deed is better than the greatest intention. At this time of year everyone is talking about intentions and setting goals for the new year. I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all. In fact, I enjoy setting a new word each year to guide my thoughts, actions, way of living and attitude in the coming year. These are all things that I try and do constantly anyway to live a healthier, more mindful simple life. I see this (or these) word more as a guiding light than a rigid goal that must be abided by (I tend to rebel when I impose too many restrictions or boundaries on myself 😏).
Before setting a goal, or guiding light as I'm calling them this year, it's important to have a conversation with yourself and really figure out what's going well in your life. Don't think of problems that need to be fixed - instead view things in a more positive light. What do you want more of this year? What do you need to guide you to the life you are dreaming of? This year I've been taking my time picking a guiding light and I've actually settled on 2.
The first one is Faith. This one is multi-faceted. I want my faith in God to deepen and be nurtured even more this year. I want faith that, fundamentally, all is right with the world; faith that everything will be alright; and faith that I do have the skills and information I need at any given particular time to deal with whatever comes my way. I found last year quite overwhelming and yet I got though it. And this year I need faith that I am on the right track and that I'll get where I want to be going.
The second one is Breathe. One of the guided meditations that I like to do works on breath and I've found it really works for re-calibrating my breath, keeping me more grounded and slowing down my heart race. One of the techniques that works for me is to breathe in through my nose for two counts and then out for four counts. I feel that being mindful of how I am breathing is also going to bring me back to faith and how I need to be aware of my attitude.
Diane in Denmark has been a great inspiration for me this last year, especially with simplifying and downsizing. One thing that she encourages is a Pamper Basket. She has a whole playlist on Youtube about this if you are interested in learning more. I love the idea of having everything in one place to have a sit down, and a mindful break.
So today I spent some time putting together a little basket. I included some magazines that I've borrowed from the library, a Crossword book, a Word search book, a notebook and pen in case I want to jot down ideas or anything from reading. There are also chocolates, (Guylian - my favourites), hand cream and a nail file. This is just a first draft; I hope it will grow and evolve as I carve out little moments of pampering this year. The basket really is a great idea because I can leave it here near my favourite chair, but I can also just grab it and go outside, or into my bedroom if I'd prefer.
How are you approaching 2025? Have you set any intentions or established guiding lights? Do these include little moments of pampering?
Thanks for stopping by. I really wish all of you a wonderful year filled with laughter, peace and happiness.
