Classic Style Inspiration: Jessica Fletcher

Recently re-runs of the classic Murder She Wrote starring Dame Angela Lansbury has started playing on television. I record them and watch one or two on the weekend or whenever I get the chance to have a sit down. If you don't know it, Murder She Wrote ran from 1984-1996 and follows retired English teacher-cum-detective fiction-write-cum-amateur-sleuth Jessica Fletcher. Due to her curious nature and intellectual observations, Fletcher not only writes about crimes and murders but she often finds herself embroiled in real crimes as well. I love so many things about this show: the cosy mysteries, the stunning film locations, and Jessica Fletcher's classic outfits. I thought it was time that we have another classic style discussion and Jessica Fletcher seemed the perfect choice for us to discuss. Here are 10 reasons why Jessica Fletcher should be your next classic style inspiration.

1. A scarf is always a good idea

I think this is the best piece of advice we can take from Mrs Fletcher. Simple outfits that lack style, individuality or that little something extra can be easily fixed with a scarf. Over the shoulders, round the neck, or if you can pull it off, in the hair. And the great thing is, scarves are always, ALWAYS, in second hand shops, in a variety of fabrics so you can cheaply pick up a few to change your looks considerably. They work well in all seasons and can be used as a shawl or on colder days for extra warmth (see tip #7).

2. Pussy bows add a classic touch

I've seen this style of blouse back in the shops and think it must be a classic. It works well for all ages, can be dressed up with a jacket or pearls (a la Jessica) or worn with jeans or a denim skirt for a more casual look. This type of blouse negates the need for a scarf because the extra detail is in the pretty bow around the neck. Jess, always the one for a little bit extra, has added pearls with hers.

3. Have a signature haircut

Murder She Wrote ran for twelve years (1984-1996) and during this time, Jessica sported the same short, blonde 'do. It was her signature hairstyle and suited her age, style and occupation.

4. Skirts and shirts are timeless

One of Jessica's staple outfits are a skirt and blouse, often in matching fabrics but not always. I love this look and find it timeless. Jessica mixes her look, sometimes wearing a pencil skirt and other times an A-line skirt; either way, she looks polished and put together. It's such a simple formula and one that has never gone out of style.

5. Bike riding is classic

Did you know that Jessica Fletcher can't drive? Her main form of transport around Cabot Cove is her bicycle. However, this doesn't mean she gets around in exercise clothes all the time. Au contraire. I have seen her wearing pink midi dresses and low heeled court shoes whilst riding her bike. See #10 for more on exercise clothing and when it is appropriate.

6. A trench coat will never go amiss

Perfect for New England's autumn and spring weather, a trench coat always looks classy yet practical. The deep collar keeps the rain off one's neck and the belt cinches in the waist. In a neutral beige (Jessica's favourite choice) it matches all the many colours that Jessica likes to wear - pale pinks, blues, reds and navy.

7. Dress for the seasons - especially winter!

Scarves, gloves, coats, hats, you name it! You're not going to see JB Fletcher shivering on a chilly, New England morning! I feel like people are dressing very differently these days, especially in winter. I have seen Youtube videos with so-called "winter" outfits that would not keep me warm for a minute! Let's embrace all the great accessories that winter can bring us. And the base outfit doesn't have to change. See tip #1 for more! In the photo below right, Jess is wearing a grey wool overcoat, similar in style to her classic trench coat. This sort of coat is worth the investment, especially if you live in cooler climes, and will last for years.

8. Stylish sleepwear is a must

In Season 3, episode 13 "Crossed Up", Jessica spends the entire show in bed with a bad back. She wears some seriously stylish pyjamas in this episode, so much so, that she can discuss the case with her nephew Grady, Sheriff Amos Tupper and Dr Seth Hazlitt quite comfortably from her bed. If you've been sleeping in an old t-shirt, or holey flannel pj's, it might be time to purchase some new, classy sleepwear. And don't forget, presentable robes are a must!

9. Embrace colour

Very rarely will you see Jessica Fletcher wearing all black, unless it is a funeral or an otherwise very serious occasion. Jessica dons a variety of different colours, from pinks to reds, creams and off-whites, blues and lemons. Her make-up is always muted and understated and her nails are always a pale pink, or neutral colour. She leaves the colour for her clothing or her scarves. She often wears monochromatic outfits, matching different shades of colour in the one outfit. Don't be afraid to embrace some colour, but if this is new for you, then perhaps start with a colourful scarf around the neck.

10. Keep exercise clothes for exercising

There is no doubt about it - Jessica Fletcher is a stylish woman. Even when she is sitting at her kitchen table working, she is dressed well. The only time we see her wearing anything "leisurewear" is when she is exercising. Jess does exercise a lot, whether it be walking, jogging or riding her bike and at these times dresses appropriately.

If you are considering purchasing some new clothes as this season changes perhaps consider some classic pieces as worn by the ever stylish Jessica Fletcher: classic shirts, skirts, trenches, and scarves can all form a sound basis for a truly classic wardrobe. Have a wonderful weekend, friend!

  1. Lovely! I love taking inspiration where I find it and you definitely found a classic style with Jessica aka Angela Lansbury. She always looked comfortable as though these were her own clothes and not just something provided by the costume department didn't she?

    1. I think you're absolutely right, Terri! The fact that Ms Lansbury always looked comfortable, the clothes fitted her well, and her were appropriate for her character and the role she was trying to portray, all add to the classic nature of both her wardrobe and the show.
Thanks for stopping by again! :)
