Tidbits: February 25 2022

I'm really enjoying these Tidbits posts, and I hope you are too! This week was still quite warm here but there are definite signs in the garden that autumn is on the way. We got plenty of tomatoes, though still not enough to preserve - we are enjoying them with fresh bread and ham. The potatoes are coming along; I can't wait until they are ready because there is nothing better than fresh potatoes and butter! And as you can see from the glorious photo above, the harvest moon has been giving us some beautiful sunsets.

As I mentioned above, I am participating in a No Spend February, so 3 of the 4 books I am listing here today won't be released until March. This is as much to stop me from being tempted as it is to help us all plan with our budgeting (and perhaps avoid some impulse buys!!)

The Language of Food by Annabel Abbs (9781398502239) - PaperBack - Historical fiction

(Kindle edition available now, paperback available on March 2, 2022).
Told in alternate voices by the award-winning author ofThe Joyce Girl, and with recipes that leap to life from the page,The Language of Foodby Annabel Abbs is the most thought-provoking and page-turning historical novel you’ll read this year, exploring the enduring struggle for female freedom, the power of female friendship, the creativity and quiet joy of cooking and the poetry of food, all while bringing Eliza Action out of the archives and back into the public eye.

Memoirs from the Corner Country by Harold Hunt (9781922613837) - PaperBack - Biographies General Biographies

(To be released in 1 March, 2022)

I can't wait to read this book! It looks so interesting and covers such an important, yet under-recorded part of our nation's history. From the blurb:
The Corner Country is the area to the extreme far north west of New South Wales, bound by the Queensland border to the north and the South Australian border to the west. These two borders, part of the great trans-continental wild dog fence, intersect at Cameron Corner.
First published in 2006, Memoirs from the Corner Country takes the reader on a journey through one of the harshest terrains in outback Australia. May Hunt, a Malyangapa woman from Milparinka, made a life for herself and her children where dust storms swirled off the Simpson Desert and gibber-covered plains shimmered in the midday heat.

Slow Travel Journal - Notebooks & Journals

(To be released 29th March, 2022)
I'm a long time fan of Emma Block, you can follow her at Instagram or at her blog. She has some wonderful water paint books (which I have and have used with great success), but I chose to showcase this travel journal of hers because as the world starts to re-open again you may consider travelling. Travel journals are such a classic past-times, especially from women of the later 19th and early 20th century. As the blurb states, As much about mindfulness as it is about travel, it will make every trip a transformative experience.

Tequila Mockingbird: Cocktails With a Literary Twist ~ Tim Federle

This is an older book (came out in 2013) but I thought it sounded so funny that I had to include it here! From the blurb:
A fun gift for barflies and a terrific treat for book clubs, Tequila Mockingbird is the ultimate cocktail book for the literary obsessed. Featuring 65 delicious drink recipes, paired with wry commentary on history's most beloved novels,  the book also includes bar bites, drinking games, and whimsical illustrations throughout. Even if you don't have a B.A. in English, tonight you're gonna drink like you do. Drinks include: The Pitcher of Dorian Grey GooseThe Last of the Mojitos, Love in the Time of Kahlua, Romeo and JulepA Rum of One's Own, Are You There, God? It's Me, Margarita, Vermouth the Bell Tolls and more!

I took this free, online course with Futurelearn last year and found it really interesting. If you are interested in the houses that appear in Charles Dickens or Jane Austen novels, then this course is for you!
You only need an email to sign up for the course (with access for a limited time), but if you wish to pay then you can have access to the course forever and get a certificate of completion.

Part of SBS' Great Minds Podcast, this beautiful, relaxing meditation is guided by Mayumi KataokaMayumi is a Sydney-based certified Forest Therapy Guide who found shinrin-yoku while searching for a better way to connect to nature as a photographer. She now leads walking tours in Sydney as a forest bathing instructor.
